Barcode Types
There is a wide variety of different bar code types, called symbologies.
The symbology you use will depend on your application. You may also need
to read bar codes on products or documents which come to you already barcoded.
Code 39
Code39 - is the most commonly used bar code. Because it can encode both
letters and numbers, it is ideal for most industrial and non retail applications.
If you are just starting a barcode application of your own, we recommend
using Code 39.
UPC
UPC (Universal Product Code)- is used for retail product labeling. This
is the familiar bar code seen on packages and coupons. It is a numeric
only, fixed length bar code. UPC-A is the most commonly used version of
UPC code. In addition, there are several other versions of UPC code. UPC-E
is a shortened version, used where space is limited, and EAN/JAN (European/Japanese
Article Numbering) is used outside the United States.
Interleaved 2 of 5
Interleaved 2 of 5 - is used in for some industrial and other applications,
where a numeric only bar code can be used. It also is used for master carton
labeling in retail. Interleaved 2 of 5 produces a somewhat more compact
bar code than Code 39.
Codabar
Codabar - is used in certain specialized applications, such as blood bag
labeling. It also is used by Federal Express for tracking airbills.
Others
There are many other bar code symbologies. Most are used infrequently,
and for specialized purposes. Please contact R.E.B. Software's' customer
service department if you have question about a particular symbology.
